Farming in the Agulhas region has always been a challenge. The sandy and rocky soil was not ideal for traditional crops, so farmers adapted by raising hardy livestock such as sheep and cattle. Over time, wheat and barley farming became more common, especially in the fertile patches near rivers and wetlands.
