Land of the Khoisan, Steeped in History

Before European explorers arrived at the southern tip of Africa, the Agulhas region was home to the Khoisan people, some of the continent’s earliest inhabitants. These skilled hunter-gatherers lived in harmony with the land, relying on the rich natural resources of the coastal plains, fynbos-covered hills, and abundant marine life.

The Khoisan gathered shellfish from the rocky shores, hunted antelope in the open grasslands, and used the park’s freshwater pools to sustain their communities.

Find

Today, visitors can still find traces of their presence in ancient shell middens—piles of discarded shells and bones that offer clues about their diet and way of life thousands of years ago. The Khoisan also left behind fascinating rock art, some of which can still be seen in the caves and rocky overhangs of the region.
